AI a time for everything

A Time for Everything: Why AI Should Wait Until High School

As Gurgaon parents, we constantly feel the pressure to keep our children “ahead of the curve.”

The buzz about Artificial Intelligence (AI) in use across sectors, including in education, is intense.

But before we rush to put robotic  & AI tutors and personalized learning apps into the hands of our primary and middle schoolers, we need to ask a crucial question….

IS THERE A RIGHT TIME FOR EVERY EDUCATIONAL TOOL?

WE BELIEVE THE ANSWER IS A RESOUNDING YES.

Just as a four-year-old needs wooden blocks more than a coding course, we must protect the foundational years of learning—Primary and Middle School—from the early over-adoption of AI.

THE CORE MISSION IN THE EARLY & YOUNGER YEARS Child’s EDUCATION IS: HOLISTIC & FOUNDATIONAL

Primary and middle school education is not about maximizing academic output; it is about building our foundation & core development, which is easiest to learn & embellish in these years. This stage is foundational for development & skills that no algorithm can teach. And besides, screen usage should be a big NO NO – as research is repeatedly indicating, including in some advanced economies:

  • The Power of Physicality: Handwriting, drawing – all on paper (not on digital screens), building physical models, experiencing physically, and lab work are essential for developing fine motor & mental skills and complex neural connections.

EARLY USAGE OF AI TOOLS WILL NATURALLY PUSH CHILDREN TOWARDS SCREENS, AND TAKING THE EASIER PATH – REPLACING PHYSICAL ACTION WITH SWIPING.

  • THE CRUCIAL SOCIAL CRUCIBLE: The classroom is the child’s first society. Negotiation, discussion, empathy, turn-taking, and conflict resolution are learned only through messy, face-to-face, peer-to-peer physical interactions.

Over-reliance on individualized AI tutoring risks creating intellectually advanced but socially isolated learners.

  • THE JOY OF THE STRUGGLE: AI’s primary function is to simplify and smooth out the learning curve.

But struggling with a challenging math problem, asking a teacher or maybe a friend for help, and finally finding the solution is where learning is fine-tuned; resilience and grit are built.

By offering instant, personalized feedback, AI can inadvertently short-circuit the essential learning cycle of productive failure.

HERE’s AN ANALOGY: We don’t teach a child to run by putting them in a race car.

We teach them by letting them walk, stumble, fall, and get up again & then jog and first gently run. So we must allow our children’s minds & bodies to “walk” and then “run”, before they “race” with AI assistance.

SCREEN TIME & THE FOCUS CRISIS?

No Screens

We are already battling the ubiquitous presence of screens in our children’s lives. Introducing AI-driven learning tools often means increasing sustained screen exposure at an age when deep focus and attentiveness are fragile and need to be strengthened.

Many progressive educators and advanced countries (like FINLAND, FRANCE, SWEEDEN, AUSTRALIA), after considerable research, are now prioritizing screen-free learning in the early & younger years (typically no screens  uptill age 12 and gradual/limited introduction thereafter ) due to established links between excessive digital exposure and:

  • Attention Deficit: Training the mind to expect instant feedback and novelty, making deep work on a textbook difficult.
  • Sleep and Health Issues: Blue light and passive consumption impact neurological and physical development.

IF AI’S PRIMARY DELIVERY MECHANISM IS A SCREEN, THEN ITS APPLICATION IN PRIMARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL IS INHERENTLY IN CONFLICT WITH HOLISTIC CHILD HEALTH & DEVELOPMENT.

SO WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME FOR SOME AI USAGE ?

HIGH SCHOOL & COLLEGE

The purpose of education changes dramatically as children mature. This is where AI truly belongs:

STAGEPrimary & Middle School (Ages 6-14)High School & College (Ages 15+)
FocusDevelopmental, Social, Foundational SkillsSpecialization, Advanced Research, Efficiency
Learning GoalHow to Learn (Process & Inquiry)What to Know & Why (Content & Mastery)
AI RoleDiscouraged (Interferes with basics)Limited & Strategic Use (Enhances rigor & insights)

By High School and College, students are developmentally equipped to handle the complexities of AI, using it as a sophisticated tool for:

  • Advanced Research Curation: Sifting through massive data sets (under supervision).
  • Essay Structuring: Learning to outline complex arguments quickly.
  • Skill Mastery: Using AI tutors for deep dives into specific, high-level subject areas like Organic Chemistry or Calculus.

At this stage, the child is mature enough to understand AI’s limitations and biases, ensuring they remain the master of the tool, not its dependent user.

SO WHAT SHOULD PARENTS IN GURGAON ASK ?

Instead of asking schools how much AI they use, ask them:

  1. “What is your school’s official policy on screen time for my child’s age group?”
  2. “How does the curriculum ensure robust, screen-free, collaborative activities and projects?”
  3. “How are you training teachers to coach ‘soft skills’ that AI might bypass?”

Let’s prioritize the timeless, human elements of learning for our younger children. Let’s give them the gift of a childhood centered on play, human connection, physical movement, and productive struggle.

AI WILL TRANSFORM THE WORLD, YES…. BUT FOR OUR CHILDREN’S EDUCATION, LET’S AGREE: GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT!

A SHIFT IN PERSPECTIVE FOR GURGAON PARENTS

At the end, our goal isn’t to create mini-experts in today’s knowledge. It’s to raise resilient, resourceful, and curious human beings who are excited to learn for a lifetime, including from each other and are comfortable in diverse groups.

So let’s pause and consider all of this – for the long-term good of your child – in a fast-changing & evolving world.

WE SUGGEST – CHOOSE A GOOD NEIGHBOURHOOD SCHOOL WITH A DIVERSE CROWD & GOOD CULTURE, VALUES – AND NO SCREENS BASED EDUCATION TILL MIDDLE SCHOOL – SO YOUR CHILD HAS TIME FOR DEVELOPING THE RIGHT LIFE SKILLS & BEHAVIOUR – SO IMPORTANT FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE – BY FAR MORE IMPORTANT IN OUR VIEW THAN AI.

These are amongst the schools in your community, the ones you can sometimes see from your balcony, the ones that are just a short walk or a quick/short ride away.

Choosing a neighbourhood school isn’t about compromising on quality. Many of these schools are equipped with excellent teachers, modern facilities, and a curriculum that rivals their ‘fancier’ counterparts.

What they offer, because they may be even smaller campuses – that the others can’t, is the gift of time, as you & your child don’t waste precious hours daily to reach the fancy distant school, and usually greater focus on each child, as there are fewer children on campus.

By choosing a school close to home, you’re not just saving your child from the stress and fatigue of a long daily commute. You’re giving them the gift of a childhood filled with play, exploration, and connection.

By making the right choices, you’re giving them the chance to be children, not just passengers.

So let’s choose a good neighborhood school, and let’s give our children the gift of time  to explore & imbibe the joy of learning .”

Also, we recommend that you stay away from a school with a significant mismatch of culture with your own desirable values/ideals.

Engage with teachers, other parents with children in that school, and try to ask/look out for these aspects – during the walk-through – when assessing a school.

And most of all, do not get carried away by the fancy/glitzy infrastructure.

why – the Sixth Element?

Very simply, the Sixth Element was a phrase coined by the school founders 20 years back, to illustrate igniting the joy of learning – so important for children’s development – as we nurture, and get them ready for the future.

How to Foster a Well-Rounded Child?

While there is lots of operating structure and detailed SOPs in school’s daily /weekly/monthly/annual – schedules – “how” the same is executed is unique – i.e., the Sixth element way of incorporating co-curricular & scientific & artistic activities, project work etc – leading to children enjoy learning & look forward to coming to school each day (and interestingly they do miss school on holidays 😊 ! )

confident kids

Some examples of what’s done on instilling values & character building:

  • Instill values: Understanding differences between right or wrong, is discussed in its many facets often. As also discussing environmental issues, volunteering for community activities, clean-ups, and respecting all living beings.
  • Values as a Compass: Values are the moral principles that guide our actions. The Cambridge International Curriculum, with its emphasis on global citizenship and community service, fosters values like respect, empathy, and responsibility
  • Embrace sustainability: Reduce waste, conserve energy, and grow your own food together. Encouraging minimalism (BTW we are a uniform school), upcycling, gardening, and exploring green technologies like rain water harvesting, recycling, etc
  • Building Confidence: The curriculum’s focus on individual & team achievement (over experiential projects in small groups) and overcoming difficulties – and making progress, encouraged by the teacher helps build self-esteem. By setting and achieving goals, students develop a strong sense of confidence and resilience
  • Life Skills for Real World: The curriculum’s focus on independent learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving equips students with essential life skills. These skills are invaluable in navigating challenges and opportunities- building confidence.

THE SIXTH ELEMENT’s commitment to sustainability?

At the Sixth Element, we believe that education should go beyond classrooms. Our green airy, spacious campuses are a living laboratory, where children learn experientially about sustainable practices. From solar panels to rainwater harvesting, recycling & near no plastics usage.
