We’ve all been there. It’s 7:00 AM, your toddler is screaming because the crust was left on the toast, and in a moment of sheer exhaustion, you cave.
It’s easier, right?
We want our children to be happy, safe, and always shielded from the harshness of the world.
But there is a growing trend in modern parenting that experts are calling : “Over-Parenting” or “Clear all obstacles – Parenting”—where they provide them too much comfort & ease all the time – clear every obstacle out of our child’s path before they even trip over it.
While it all comes from a place of deep love, this “comfort cage” might actually be making our children’s lives much harder when they step outside the front door.
SO WHY IS PROVIDING TOO MUCH COMFORT IS NOT A GREAT APPROACH?
THE REALITY CHECK: FROM “HOME KING” TO ‘CLASSROOM CITIZEN’
When a child’s every whim is catered to at home, the transition to school isn’t just a change of scenery—it’s a total culture shock!
Here’s what happens when the “Upper Hand” at home meets the reality of the classroom:
The Adjustment Gap: In a classroom of 15-20 or + students, a child who is used to being the “center of the universe” struggles to understand that their needs are now equal to everyone else’s.
The Transition Struggle: These children usually have the longest transition periods.
While peers are diving into finger painting, the over-protected child is often still at the door, unable to self-soothe or manage himself/herself in a newer setting – because they’ve never had to.
The “Tantrum Tool”: If a child learns that a scream gets them what they want at home, they will try it at school.
So when the teacher doesn’t rightfully cave, the child feels lost, frustrated, and disconnected.
THE HIDDEN COSTS OF OVER-PROTECTION
It sounds harsh, but the “spoiled” child is often the most anxious child.
By removing every challenge, we accidentally teach them that they aren’t capable of handling anything on their own. This manifests in ways that disrupt their education & over time life skills:
| THE BEHAVIOR | THE CONSEQUENCE |
| Catering to Whims | Difficulty following a structured school schedule. |
| Skipping School | Missed social cues and falling behind in foundational learning. |
| Avoiding Homework | Lack of accountability and “grit” when tasks get difficult. |
| Chronic Tardiness | A sense that rules are avoidable suggestions, leading to friction with authority. |
SO HOW TO PIVOT? – RAISING RESILIENT STUDENTS!
The goal isn’t to be “mean” parents – it’s instead to be brave parents.
Preparing your child for the world is more important than protecting them from it.
- Embrace the “No”: A tantrum is a storm; you are the lighthouse. Stay still. Let them experience the frustration of not getting their way in a safe environment.
- Establish “School Rules” at Home: Consistency is key. If school starts at 8:00 AM, the routine at home should support that—no exceptions for “just five more minutes” of cartoons.
- Let Them Fail Small: If they forget their lunchbox (and it won’t hurt them to be a little hungry or eat a plain school cracker), let them experience the consequence. It’s better they learn responsibility now than at age 25.
- Always Air conditioned environ – not good: let them handle “some” extreme heat of the sun or severe cold in winters.
Strengthen them – so they can adapt – not be at ease in only very comfortable Fully Air-conditioned environs. Its actually good for them physically (some exposure to extreme sun and extreme cold is known to be good & healthy) & also builds emotional strength & life skills.
Is incidentally good for developing their immunity also – they will most certainly fall ill less – with some regular exposure to the elements.
Some physical activities/play outdoors – regardless of the weather (including extreme heat/cold) – is actually good for them.
LET’S STRENGTHEN THEM!
- Partner with the Teacher: Teachers aren’t the enemy; they are your child’s first guide into society. Be positive about their feedback.
- If a teacher mentions a behavioral issue, listen. They see the version of your child that needs to grow/evolve.

Our job as parents isn’t to make life easy for our children; it’s to make our children strong – so it’s easy for them in the life they will lead. By stepping back and allowing them to face small challenges, handle their own “boredom,” and respect boundaries, we aren’t being “less” of a parent. We are giving them the greatest gift possible: The confidence to stand on their own two feet.
SO DEAR PARENT – ARE YOU READY TO LET THEM TRY TO OVERCOME/OCCASIONALLY FAIL/STRENGTHEN THEM?
WHAT’S THE APPROACH THAT YOU TAKE WITH YOUR CHILD – DEAR PARENT – DO LET US KNOW – YOUR EXPERIENCE MAY BE OF HELP TO OTHER PARENTS ALSO…KINDLY DO SHARE YOUR INPUTS IN THE COMMENTS SECTION BELOW THIS NOTE. THANKS.
AND SO CHOOSE A QUALITY NEIGHBOURHOOD SCHOOL WHICH INTEGRATES THE ABOVE APPROACH TOO
LEVERAGE THE GURUGRAM ADVANTAGE: YOU HAVE OPTIONS & CAN SHIFT EASILY – RELAX!
Unlike some rigid school systems in older cities, Gurugram is unique. It was built for a migrating & growing population—corporate transfers, expats, and young families moving in and out.
- Surplus Capacity: Gurugram is planned for future growth. There are typically more seats available in the middle grades than there are applicants, because schools anticipate the transient nature of the NCR workforce.
- The “Lateral Entry” Norm: Schools here are used to admitting students in Grade 3, Grade 6, or even Grade 9. Despite what they may say during nursery admissions – you are certainly not “locked out” if you don’t get in at Nursery.
IS IT OKAY TO CHANGE SCHOOLS?
YES. A THOUSAND TIMES, YES.
Changing schools is not a sign of failure; it is a sign of responsive/analytical parenting.
SUMMARY: A STRATEGY FOR PEACE OF MIND
If you are drowning in admission forms right now, take a step back.
- Prioritize Proximity: For Nursery/foundational schooling, look at the 0-5km radius first.
- Focus on the “Now”: Does the school feel warm? Are the teachers kind? Is there a playground? That is what matters for a 4-year-old.
- Keep Your Powder Dry: Save the stress (and the heavy commuting) for high school, when the stakes are actually higher and the specific amenities of a large campus may matter more.
SO CHOOSE A MID MARKET GOOD NEIGHBOURHOOD & GOOD CULTURE SCHOOL WITH A DIVERSE CROWD & GOOD CULTURE , VALUES – AND NO SCREENS BASED EDUCATION TILL MIDDLE SCHOOL – SO YOUR CHILD HAS TIME FOR DEVELOPING THE RIGHT LIFE SKILLS & BEHAVIOUR – SO IMPORTANT FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE
Choosing a mid-market neighborhood school isn’t about compromising on quality. Many of these schools are equipped with excellent teachers, modern facilities, and a curriculum that rivals their ‘fancier’ counterparts. What they offer, because they may be even smaller campuses – that the others can’t, is the gift of time – as you & your your child don’t waste precious hours daily to reach that fancy distant school.
Such schools usually end up providing greater focus on each child – as there are fewer children on campus.
By choosing a good culture school close to home, you’re not just saving your child from the stress and fatigue of a long daily commute. You’re giving them the gift of a childhood filled with play, exploration, and connection -in a positive environment .
we strongly recommend that stay away from a school with significant mis match of culture with your own desirable values/ideals.
Engage with teachers, other parents with children in that school and try to ask/look out for these aspects – during the walk through – when assessing a school.
And most of all do not get carried away by the fancy/glitzy BIG infrastructure. We essentially need a good nearby school with good teachers & culture – not a big factory like school with thousands of children.
