Choosing the right school for your young child in a city like Gurgaon (or any major city) can feel like a high-stakes decision.
The glossy brochures, sometimes rather fancy facilities & impractical infrastructure(like horse riding), and rather hefty price tags of the more exclusive schools often promise an automatic pathway to success.
But what if we paused and considered an uncomfortable truth:
Is admitting your child to a costly school truly the best option for their holistic development?
THE ANSWER, SURPRISINGLY, ‘MIGHT’ BE NO.
Let’s explore & understand why prioritizing the flashiest, costliest option might inadvertently shortchange your child’s most crucial formative experiences.
THE UNSUNG HERO: WHY GREAT TEACHERS TRUMP GOLD-PLATED FACILITIES
Let’s be clear: High-quality education often comes with a price tag. Many expensive schools do attract and retain excellent, experienced teachers, which is a massive advantage. Teachers are the single most important in-school factor in a child’s success.
However, the key is to prioritize choosing a “good school” over “the most expensive school.”

Teaching/education is a vocation, not a price point: outstanding, passionate educators are found across a spectrum of schools, and they are usually driven by their love of teaching & contributing to children – and not necessarily salaries.
So many schools across the spectrum invest wisely in faculty training, stable environments, and fair compensation, ensuring your child is taught by professionals who view teaching as their calling.
Focus on Retention, Culture and Philosophy: When evaluating schools, look past the infrastructure. Ask about the teacher-to-student ratio, teacher turnover levels & attrition, and the school’s approach to professional development & staff retention. A school that values and invests in its teachers ensures a nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment, which is far more valuable than an imported climbing wall.
Just process, name plate, curriculum, structure and training are not enough. The school’s Culture, education vision & operations, akin to our traditional gurukul’s – shishya parampara & related values – can be far more critical. After all, a school should not be run like a factory.
The Life Skill Advantage: Diversity Breeds Humility and Success

This is the most profound reason to look beyond the ultra-exclusive bubble.
The Rich only crowd – The lack of genuine socioeconomic diversity in the most elite institutions can potentially be a significant disadvantage to a child’s long-term success.
The Humility Dividend: When children mix with diverse peers & respect others from various socioeconomic backgrounds, they gain an immediate, organic understanding that privilege is not universal and that hard work, struggle, and different circumstances shape every life. Such exposure to a mixed crowd cultivates understanding of life better, inculcates humility and undergrounds—traits that prevent arrogance and entitlement.
MASTERING THE “REAL WORLD” SUCCESS CODE: Success in life, whether in business, community, or personal relationships, hinges on your ability to interact effectively with people from all walks of life — as in a workplace example: across your colleagues, your service providers, your neighbors, and your team.
Children in diverse settings naturally develop superior interpersonal skills and a broader social acumen. Peer group matters!
They learn to read different social cues, practice empathy without prompting, and adapt their communication style. This early mastery of diverse social dynamics often translates into better leadership and collaboration skills later in life.
Simply put: A diverse environment prepares a child not just for a great college, but for a great life.
THE PRESSURE COOKER VS. THE BALANCED CHILDHOOD
Ultra-expensive schools often equate their high fees with a focus on hyper-competitive academic outcomes, sometimes at the expense of a child’s emotional well-being.
Focus on ‘Being’ vs. ‘Doing’: Schools with a more balanced approach allow more room for unstructured play, emotional literacy, and developing an intrinsic love for learning rather than just chasing the next top grade.
A grounded, humble child who behaves well with everyone will ultimately navigate the corporate ladder and life’s complexities more smoothly than a highly stressed, technically brilliant one lacking social grace.
A Shift in Perspective for Gurgaon Parents
When evaluating schools, shift your focus from the fee structure & fancy-glitzy overhyped(sometimes by its pricing) brand, to the school’s core values, education philosophy, community spirit, and faculty excellence.
Instead of asking: “How many facilities does it have?”
Ask these genuinely thought-provoking questions:
“How does the school ensure the quality, stability, and passion of its teaching staff?”
“What is the socioeconomic background of the student body, and how does the school actively foster interaction and mutual respect between diverse groups?”
“What is the school’s philosophy on teaching students humility, empathy, and respect for all members of the community?”
“Is this a uniform school? Or does the school encourage/permit ultra-branded fashionable attire in school/events?”
The best school for your child is the one that offers the richest human experience and the best teaching, not necessarily the largest bank account.
Choose the school that will make your child kind, grounded, and that inculcates the joy of learning and ultimately, truly successful.
At the end, our goal isn’t to create mini-experts in today’s knowledge. It’s to raise resilient, resourceful, and curious human beings who are excited to learn for a lifetime, including from each other and are comfortable in diverse groups.
So let’s pause and consider all of this – for the long-term good of your child – in a fast-changing & evolving world.
WE SUGGEST – CHOOSE A GOOD THE NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL WITH A DIVERSE CROWD & GOOD CULTURE – SO YOUR CHILD HAS TIME FOR DEVELOPING THE RIGHT LIFE SKILLS & BEHAVIOR – SO IMPORTANT FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE.
These are amongst the schools in your community, the ones you can see from your balcony, the ones that are just a short walk or a quick/short ride away.
Choosing a neighborhood school isn’t about compromising on quality. Many of these schools are equipped with excellent teachers, modern facilities, and a curriculum that rivals their ‘fancier’ counterparts. What they offer, because they may be even smaller campuses – that the others can’t, is the gift of time, and usually greater focus on each child, as there are fewer children on campus.
By choosing a school close to home, you’re not just saving your child from the stress and fatigue of a long daily commute. You’re giving them the gift of a childhood filled with play, exploration, and connection.
By making the right choices, you’re giving them the chance to be children, not just passengers.
So let’s choose the neighborhood school, and let’s give our children the gift of time to explore & imbibe the joy of learning .”
LOOK FOR A GOOD NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL WITH A GOOD CULTURE & TEACHERS – NOT JUST BIG FANCY GLITZY INFRASTRUCTURE.
Let’s recognize that the teachers are the most important in any good school; as also the culture of the school, which can be assessed by a simple walk through and/or things like teacher attrition, etc, as also the peer group of the child/school parents.
Also, we recommend that you stay away from a school with a significant mismatch of culture with your values/ideals.
Engage with teachers, other parents with children in that school and try to ask/look out for these aspects – during the walk-through – when assessing a school.
And most of all, do not get carried away by the fancy/glitzy infrastructure.

why – the Sixth Element?
Very simply, the Sixth Element was a phrase coined by the school founders 20 years back, to illustrate igniting the joy of learning – so important for children’s development – as we nurture, and get them ready for the future.
How to Foster a Well-Rounded Child?
While there is lots of operating structure and detailed SOPs in school’s daily /weekly/monthly/annual – schedules – “how” the same is executed is unique – i.e., the Sixth element way of incorporating co-curricular & scientific & artistic activities, project work etc – leading to children enjoy learning & look forward to coming to school each day (and interestingly they do miss school on holidays 😊 ! )

Some examples of what’s done on instilling values & character building:
- Instill values: Understanding differences between right or wrong, is discussed in its many facets often. As also discussing environmental issues, volunteering for community activities, clean-ups, and respecting all living beings.
- Values as a Compass: Values are the moral principles that guide our actions. The Cambridge International Curriculum, with its emphasis on global citizenship and community service, fosters values like respect, empathy, and responsibility
- Embrace sustainability: Reduce waste, conserve energy, and grow your own food together. Encouraging minimalism (BTW we are a uniform school), upcycling, gardening, and exploring green technologies like rain water harvesting, recycling, etc
- Building Confidence: The curriculum’s focus on individual & team achievement (over experiential projects in small groups) and overcoming difficulties – and making progress, encouraged by the teacher helps build self-esteem. By setting and achieving goals, students develop a strong sense of confidence and resilience
- Life Skills for Real World: The curriculum’s focus on independent learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving equips students with essential life skills. These skills are invaluable in navigating challenges and opportunities- building confidence.
THE SIXTH ELEMENT’s commitment to sustainability?
At the Sixth Element, we believe that education should go beyond classrooms. Our green airy, spacious campuses are a living laboratory, where children learn experientially about sustainable practices. From solar panels to rainwater harvesting, recycling & near no plastics usage.
Our curriculum integrates sustainability into every subject, fostering a deep appreciation for nature, science, commerce & the arts – while instilling a desire to protect our planet.
