Kangra paintings, a refined school of Pahari miniature art, flourished in the 18th century under the patronage of Raja Sansar Chand, who encouraged local artists in the Kangra Valley.

The paintings are known for their delicate brushwork, vibrant colors, and lyrical depictions of themes from Hindu mythology, particularly the depictions of Radha-Krishna and nature.

The painting starts with a detailed outline on fine handmade paper. The background, typically lush landscapes with rivers, trees, and mountains, is painted in soft colors. Figures are painted with gentle brushstrokes, delicate expressions, and fluid lines. Fine detailing of garments, jewelry, and nature completes the work.

The materials used are handmade paper, natural pigments (e.g., indigo, vermilion, malachite green) and brushes made of animal hair.
